2022 was a big year for me. Our third son was born. He inspired me to look carefully at all the little moments that we have and find the beauty in our life. This year we visited Hoi An, Vietnam, and spent some time living the caravan life in Korea. Vietnam was important to me as the colors of the lantern city have left a lasting impression on me. I carried my 6-month son most of the time. Climbed mountains, visited caves, and went on a wildlife safari to view the endangered Langur monkey all while breastfeeding him at the same time. 

 

 This year's work includes portraits of our family life, friends, and people in the traditional market next to our home in Korea. In the first part of the year, I continued working in oil pastels, and toward the latter part of the year as became fascinated with the choppy brushwork that can be created of Sennelier's oil sticks.

 

As a busy mom of three boys, a business owner, and a professor, I work fast and I need to clean up fast. My lifestyle has inspired my choice of materials.  Even my choice of materials is a testimony to the endlessly busy life of a mother.  Working fast and showing impressionistic-inspired brushwork is important to me. My short windows of time mean painting is akin to an athletic sport. Working to cover the canvas with strong, wild brushwork is what I think best describes my work.
